Ridley signs up

LEFT sided player Steve Ridley this week became ninth Buxton player to commit himself to the club for next season.

The former Scunthorpe player has made a most impressive recovery from the career-threatening fractured femur injury and has agreed to stay at the Silverlands, despite offers from other clubs.

Chairman Tony Tomlinson commented: "We are delighted that Steve is staying with us and I am sure that a successful pre-season will add to the remarkable recovery that he has already made.

"With nine quality players re-signed for next season, there are genuine reasons for optimism for the new season - with our manager John Reed on the lookout for several signings to strengthen the squad."

Changes that are likely to the make-up of the Unibond Premier Division for next season are particularly favourable to Buxton. The well-supported Eastwood and Ilkeston have been promoted, while their replacements Hucknall and Burscough are within reasonably easy reach.

A potential local derby against Hyde United seems unlikely now to take place. Although finishing in a Blue Square North relegation place, the Tameside club are highly likely to gain a reprieve, with Kings Lynn demoted instead on ground considerations - that will mean a long trip to East Anglia for the Bucks.

Similarly, Whitby seem likely to remain in the Premier Division as Cammell Laird are under sentence of demotion, again for ground issues.

Mr Tomlinson said: "I hope our supporters recognise just how expensive these changes will be for us, with several more long trips adding to travel costs.

"I know I keep on about finance, but our supporters need to understand that we do need additional income to make ends meet at this level. We need supporters to buy their season tickets and join the Mega Bucks."
