FA Trophy: Buxton gear up for home FA Trophy replay against Grimsby Town

BUXTON FC welcome Blue Square Bet Premier table-toppers Grimsby Town to the Silverlands tonight (Wednesday) for their FA Carlsberg Trophy First Round Proper Replay.

Manager Martin McIntosh was full of praise for his players after the Bucks pulled off a shock at Blundell Park on Saturday by holding Grimsby to a 0-0 draw on their own turf.

And his praise was echoed by chairman Tony Tomlinson, who told the Advertiser this week: “Saturday’s draw must rank as one of the best results of recent times.

“Grimsby are at the top of the Blue Square Bet Premier and that current placing justifies a claim that they are the best team outside the Football League.

“Buxton play two divisions and some 60 places below, so for us to achieve that result is the equivalent of League One Colchester United holding Manchester United at Old Trafford.

“They (Grimsby) obviously took the game very seriously. Their manager turned up to watch us at Nantwich, and eight of the Grimsby team that started on Saturday had played against Braintree in the league the previous weekend and won 3-0.”

Tomlinson added: “I am delighted for manager Martin McIntosh - who has masterminded successful campaigns in both the FA Cup and FA Trophy, a rare achievement in the same season for a club at our level - and for the half-dozen players still with us who suffered the agonising 95th-minute defeat at Fleetwood when facing a similar challenge to that of last Saturday.”

Kick-off at the Silverlands for the FA Trophy replay on Wednesday is 7.45pm. The match will be decided on the night, with extra time and penalties if needed.

Admission is £9 (£6 concessions).

The winner will entertain Braintree Town or Havant & Waterlooville in the Second Round Proper on Saturday December 15.
