Eastwood beat Hednesford to strengthen title challenge

ON A day when more than 10,000 turned out to watch UniBond League action, the big clash saw Premier Division leaders Eastwood Town edge out Hednesford Town 1-0.

The latter dropped to third after Nantwich Town took advantage with a 3-1 success over Ashton United although the "Dabbers" left it late with two of the goals coming in the last five minutes.

Surprise package North Ferriby United kept a grip on fourth place by beating Cammell Laird, and FC United of Manchester moved back into the play-off spots with a victory at Kendal Town.

A win for Bradford Park Avenue at bottom club Prescot Cables would have seen them in the play-off places, but they were held 1-1 after an amazing 6-4 home win over Ashton United in midweek.

A first win in 11 games for Guiseley when they beat Leigh Genesis saw them move up two places to seventh thanks to Ilkeston Town being held at home by lowly Worksop Town.

Although Marine, 2-1 winners at home to Ossett Town, are down in ninth they are only two points off the play-offs.

There were important games too at the other end of the table where Whitby Town gained an invaluable three points at the expense of fellow strugglers Matlock Town.

In the other six pointers, Boston United and Witton Albion fought out a goalless draw, while Buxton and Frickley Athletic also finished all square.

There were shocks for two of the top four sides in the First Division North with last week's leaders FC Halifax Town crashing 3-1 at Colwyn Bay and Skelmersdale United losing a two goal lead at home to Harrogate Railway to go down 4-2.

Durham City took over at the top after taking full advantage with two wins in the week but they left it late before coming from a goal down at home to Chorley on Saturday to win 3-1 with all three goals coming in the final ten minutes.

Bamber Bridge retained fourth with a win at Trafford. Bottom club Salford City took a point off next to bottom Radcliffe Borough in midweek, but another home defeat at the hands of Wakefield still leaves them 14 points adrift.

The First Division South's top two met on Saturday with the spoils going the way of Belper Town who had had a run of six consecutive wins halted in midweek at Sheffield FC.

The victory put them within six points of leaders Retford United with four games in hand.

Stocksbridge PS and Carlton Town kept third and fourth places with away wins, but StamfordD, while keeping their unbeaten home record, lost ground when held by next to bottom Kidsgrove Athletic.

Right on the heels of the Lincolnshire club are Glapwell who won 4-1 at Willenhall Town.

At the bottom it's one point in eleven games for Gresley Rovers after defeat at Goole AFC.
