Dream ends for Glossop at Wembley

GLOSSOP'S dream of FA Vase glory ended on Sunday afternoon in front of over 12,000 fans at Wembley Stadium.

The Hillmen conceded two first half goals to Northern League side Whitley Bay, and despite a spirited fightback late on were unable to overturn the deficit.

The day had started with so much promise for a Glossop side participating in its first FA Vase final, and as the team emerged from the tunnel at Wembley they were greeted by rapturous applause from their thousands of travelling fans.

But the mood soon changed as first man-of-the-match Lee Kerr and then Paul Chow scored to break Glossop hearts and give Whitley Bay a two-goal cushion at half time.

This was ultimately a lead they defended until the final whistle, despite a late period of pressure from the Derbyshire side.

Speaking at the after-match press conference, Glossop manager Steve Young said: "I thought over the course of the 90 minutes we played the most attractive football between the two teams.

"I am proud as punch of these lads and what they have achieved for this football club over the last 18 months."
