Disgruntled Reed: we were really toothless up front

AFTER crashing out of the FA Cup to Stourbridge on Saturday, Buxton FC face the same side again in the FA Trophy this weekend.

And manager John Reed has a tough task on his hands rallying his gutted players after their heavy 4-0 defeat.

Speaking after Saturday's match, Reed said: "It was a disastrous day for us. On what should have been and could have been an absolutely history-making day for us, we shot ourselves in the foot.

"For the first 20 minutes we controlled the game and it looked like everything was going to plan.

"What disappointed me very badly is that I said before the game, sort numbers 11 (Sean Evans) and nine (Ryan Rowe) out and we'll win the game, but we didn't do that.

"We defended poorly. I thought we were very poor in midfield, really poor at the back and I didn't see a lot upfront. Out of 11 players, take Sam Liversidge out who I would give a tick, every other players gets a cross.

"I think we probably had 70 per cent of the play but we didn't make it count.

"Kieran (Lugsden) had a good chance in the first half and then maybe a couple of half chances in the second half.

"Chances win games. We had nothing really clear cut but I just think all over the park, we lost too many individual battles."

And having seen Stourbridge in action last weekend, Reed knows what he needs to do this weekend.

He added: "I can see where their strengths and weaknesses are. We didn't expose them.

"We've got to defend better, got to have a bit more drive in midfield and got to have a bit of sharpness up front. I thought we were really, really toothless up front (last Saturday)."
