Deserved Whaley win

Whaley Bridge Reserves 3 Holmsfield 3 Whaley won 4 2 on penalties after extra time.

Whaley, who lie mid table in the Cheshire Reserve Division, faced Holmsfield, who are third in the Hope Valley Premier Division. Given Whaley’s first team now have to play in the Senior Cup the reserves have been progressed into the Derbyshire Intermediate cup and in their debut season got a well deserved win.

Against the run of play, Holmsfield took the lead when a long through ball was not cleared by Whaley’s keeper, who opted to catch it and a Holmsfield advancing forward poked the ball past Malpass and gave Holmsfield the lead. Holmsfield hit the bar soon after. Whaley’s Tom Scorer and Jay Mellor both had good opportunities to score and both should have levelled for Whaley Bridge. Scorer eventually equalised for Whaley after latching onto a ball from Josh Bailey and placing his shot wide of the keeper. The lively Jay Mellor put Whaley ahead in the second half when he turned his man and scored from close range. The game looked like it was drifting away from Holmsfield until a long ball got in behind Whaley’s defence and Holmsfield’s forward was first to react, shooting past Whaley’s Malpass and taking the game into extra time.

In the first period of extra time it was Holmsfield who took the lead from a corner when a Holmsfield forward met the ball and steered it low into Whaley’s near post. Whaley applied a lot of pressure and Ben Lomas was judged to be just off side after he had volleyed in from ten yards. Another goalmouth scramble which looked like Whaley had equalised but the ball was judged not to have been past the goal line by the linesman.

With two minutes remaining Whaley’s Tom Scorer beat his marker, pushed the ball past another defender and shot past Holmsfield’s keeper, taking the game to penalties. All Whaley’s first four penalty takers Jordan Shuker, Ben Lomas, Jake Burton, and match winner Tom Scorer scored to win the game as Whaley’s keeper Malpass saved two of Holmsfield penalties.
