Buxton go four games without scoring

A STOPPAGE time goal by Kendal Town's Michael Cole on Saturday may yet prove to be the goal that decides this season's title as it deprived Ilkeston Town of two vital points in their pursuit of leaders Eastwood Town.

Ilkeston were held to a draw in midweek at North Ferriby United, suggesting the pendulum has perhaps swung back Eastwood's way although the Good Friday clash between the two leaders will obviously have a huge bearing on the title's destiny.

Party poopers Guiseley were at it again on Saturday and after beating Eastwood and drawing with Ilkeston they wrecked Nantwich Town's hopes of the title with a 2-0 win that kept their own play-off hopes alive.

FC United of Manchester have hit form at the right time moving up to fourth after another two wins in the week although they had to come from two down to beat Ossett Town in midweek.

No such dramatics at the weekend when they attracted the season's highest gate of 3,120 to witness a 4-0 victory over North Ferriby United.

A promising run of three away wins had got Hednesford Town's play-off hopes back on track but their home form is letting them down and relegation threatened Whitby Town took advantage with a 3-1 win that helped their cause after they had lost to the same opponents in midweek in the reveres fixture.

Bottom club Prescot Cables look doomed after two more home defeats including a 5-1 dousing by leaders Eastwod, but Leigh Genesis are unbeaten in three games under new boss Gary Flitcroft and they took four points off fellow strugglers Cammell Laird and Boston United.

Without a goal in four games after their latest defeat at Frickley Athletic, Buxton drop in to the bottom four with Matlock Town swapping places after a 4-0 victory over Marine who are having a terrible time of it.

Just three points, however, separate Boston in 15th place from Lairds in 20th.

Curzon Ashton have become the form team in the First Division North with wins in the week over three of last Saturday's top six sides and they have hauled themselves into the play-off slots at the expense of FC Halifax Town who lost at second place Skelmersdale United and are beginning to look as if they may struggle to make the play-offs.

After taking just one point from four games, Newcastle Blue Star got their show back on the road with a 3-1 success over Warrington Town while leaders Durham City, who have seen their lead cut to just three points, bounced back from Thursday's defeat at Curzon to beat Clitheroe.

Bottom club Salford City are making a great fist of attempting what seemed the impossible and are now just seven points adrift of Rossendale United with a game in hand and a home game against their target on Tuesday.

They beat Woodley Sports on Saturday but will have been disappointed to see Rossy come from behind in midweek to score a crucial victory over Warrington.

In the First Division South, Belper Town had a great week picking up six points thanks to a stoppage time goal at Stamford on Saturday when leaders Retford United were held to a goalless draw at Willenhall Town.

Belper are now just four points behind with two games in hand.

Third place Stocksbridge PS hit eight without reply against hapless Spalding United whose previous two games had seen two 5-0 defeats at the hands of Retford.

Glapwell lost ground with a home defeat in midweek but came back with a win at the weekend while Rushall Olympic were in and out of the play-off slots beating Stocksbridge in midweek but then slipping up at home on Saturday.
