Bucks cup glory - MATCH REPORT

Derbyshire Senior Cup Final Buxton 1 Matlock Town 0 (at Saltergate, Chesterfield) BUXTON FC ended their season on a high by lifting the Derbyshire Senior Cup for the first time in more than 20 years on Tuesday night.

And defender Gregg Anderson was the hero by scoring the only goal to separate the two sides as Buxton made it a hat trick of wins over their near neighbours Matlock Town in just a couple of months.

With Unibond Premier League status secured for both teams, expectations for the game were high as each side looked to finish off difficult seasons on a positive note. But the match was certainly not a showpiece event despite being held at Chesterfield's Saltergate ground.

Buxton started the first period with Neil Stevens sending the ball wide after a decent pass by Gav Knight on four minutes before Mark Reed struggled to reach a Grant Black cross on seven minutes.

A minute later and Scott Maxfield sent the first of several Buxton free kicks into the box. Reed went up for the header but the ball was punched out by Pettinger.

Another chance for Buxton to go ahead then fell to Michael Towey who latched onto a great ball from Stevens but sent the header over the bar on 13 minutes.

Anderson was next with an attempt but sent the ball high and wide before Matlock had their first real chance of the game.

Scott Hartley did brilliantly to block a low shot from Ross Hannah on 21 minutes with the striker sending the rebound ball wide.

Then, eith 27 minutes on the clock, Nathan Benger smashed the ball way over the bar before Hartley produced two fantastic saves in as many minutes to keep things equal.

The first was a block from a header following a corner before he stopped a decent effort by Danny Wood.

Then it was Pettinger who was called into action. A fantastic free kick by Scott Maxfield forced the keeper to tip the ball over the bar on 35 minutes for a corner.

Just before the break, Steve Ridley sent a free kick into the box but Gav Knight just couldn't make it count.

Ridley created the first opportunity of the second period but just sent his shot wide on 48 minutes before Matlock's Hannah saw his powerful shot saved by Hartley a minute later.

James Turley almost went close for Buxton with a header on 54 minutes before Mark Reed was dispossessed by Pettinger in front of goal soon after.

With just over an hour gone, the deadlock was finally broken with Buxton's goal coming courtesy of an error by Matlock keeper Paul Pettinger who failed to clear his area properly after a free kick.

Anderson spotted the mistake immediately and slotted home with a low drive to put his side ahead on 62 minutes.

Gav Knight then beat Pettinger with 67 minutes on the clock but the ball was intercepted by an alert Matlock player before it could roll into the net.

Some late pressure then followed as Matlock pushed for an equaliser but they failed to produce anything that threatened and the cup was lifted by the jubilant Bucks.

BUXTON: Hartley, Black, Ridley, Agus, Anderson, Stevens, Maxfield, Towey, Reed (Wood 88), Knight, Turley59).

* No attendance has yet been confirmed but a Derbyshire FA spokesman estimated the attendance at around 2000.
