FA Cup Preliminary Round

New Mills 3, Rainworth Miners Welfare 2

Despite throwing away a two-goal lead, New Mills progressed into the next round of The FA Cup at the expense of fellow Evo Stik NPL Division One South side Rainworth Miners Welfare.

The Millers, who were dealt a double pre-match blow with the late withdrawals of Carlos Meakin and Otis Gorman with knee injuries, took the lead in the 20th minute. The teams met only ten days ago with New Mills winning the NPL fixture courtesy of two free kicks and again it was a set-piece which helped breach the Rainworth defence. Antony Field delivered a wicked ball which Dean Crowe glanced home at the back post.

Field was involved in the build-up to New Mills’ second goal nine minutes later. His cross from the right found Ashley Stott, who collecting the ball with his back to goal, wriggled free of his marker to fire a shot past Saxby.

The home side relaxed, and only a superb last-ditch challenge by Clive Brown prevented Sean Cann from breaking through, but the visitors reduced the deficit six minutes before the interval. Luke Horrocks needlessly gave away a free kick which found Lee Cooksey who beat debutant James Coates.

The visitors drew level with an even better goal from Sean Cann, who left the new keeper helpless with a dipping effort from outside the penalty area.

The winner arrived with 16 minutes remaining when another dead ball proved Rainworth’s undoing when Michael Bowler expertly curled a free kick over the wall and inside the upright.

New Mills face Deeping Rangers of The United Counties Premier League on Saturday, September 17.
