TEAMS are to compete for the Harold Merrick Memorial Trophy for the last time this weekend, with the competition being axed following the demise of the Buxton Taverners League.
The final staging of the competition will see a Leek and District Sunday League XI compete against a Buxton Select XI at the Silverlands - the home of non-league team Buxton Football Club - on Sunday (kick-off 11am).
The decision to abolish the Harold Merrick Memorial Trophy was taken after consultation with the Merrick family and follows the sad demise last season of the once-thriving Buxton Taverners Sunday Football League after 37 years.
Manager Pete Machin said: “Leek & District entertained us at Harrison Park last year, so it is only right that we return the compliment.
“Leek are as upset as we are with regards to the competition’s future, but they do understand that with no league to be based from, it becomes a worthless exercise.”
The Leek league XI will be drawn mainly from Blue Mugge FC, while the Buxton side will be a selection of local football’s Who’s Who.
Admission to the match is £2.
l Ex-Buxton Taverners League side Athletico Rag has made the switch to play in the Leek & District League next season.
