Burgess snatches points for Whaley Bridge

Cheshire League First Division: Whaley Bridge FC 2, Greenalls Padgate St O 1

A GEORGE Burgess volley helped Whaley Bridge complete a league double over Greenalls.

New signing Harry Noon started up front with Lee Morris and the pair linked well early on, creating several good opportunities that were either well saved by Greenalls Clarke or just wide of the target.

However after 25 minutes some more exciting interlinking forward play found Damien Morrison on the edge of Greenalls box and he dropped a shoulder and found Morris, who fired low into the near corner to put Whaley ahead.

Tattersall dealt with the threat of Lee Deakin and Luke McCoy, while a Bill Sutton corner was headed against the bar and Burgess headed just over from another Sutton corner.

Then Whaley conceded a foul in Greenalls half and the long free-kick found the onrushing Deakin who gave Tattersall no chance.

In the second half, Burgess was put through twice by Rob Newton and Morris but on both occasions fired just wide. A Sutton free-kick narrowly missed the top corner with the keeper stranded. Greenalls had a header cleared off Whaley’s line and Tattersall punched several crosses away, before in the 70th minute Sutton hit a diagonal ball to the far post which man of the match Burgess looped over the keeper.

Whaley Bridge: J Tattersall, G Langford, S Dignan (c), C Moss, P Walker, B Sutton, D Morrison, R Newton, G Burgess, L Morris, H Noon. Substitutes: M Brown, J Gregory, C Fluery.
