STRUGGLING Buxton FC slipped to their tenth league defeat of the season on Saturday, losing 3-1 at the Silverlands to high-flying Hednesford Town.

Despite an encouraging start, Buxton were hit with a sucker punch when Darren Campion’s speculative 25-yard strike bounced in front of Buxton keeper Scott Hartley before finding its way into the net on the half-hour.

Campion then turned provider six minutes later, taking advantage of slack defending to set-up Nick Wellecomme for a simple tap-in past the stranded Bucks keeper.

Neil Stevens gave the hosts hope when he met a pin-point Mark Reed cross with a diving header to make it 2-1 just after the hour mark, but Hednesford replied immediately at the other end through Chris Clements to restore their two-goal cushion.

Then followed late drama as Buxton had two penalty appeals turned down. Firstly Kieran Lugsden was felled by Cheyenne Dunkley, although the defender looked to claim the ball, and then Michael Towey was the victim of a blatant push in the back when jumping to meet a high cross.

Towey hit the woodwork late on in the match, while goalscorer Stevens was shown a straight red card in stoppage time for comments alleged to have been made towards a linesman.

Speaking after the game, Buxton boss John Reed said: “I was pleased and really proud of my team today. I think for 80 minutes we absolutely dominated. All they (Hednesford) had in their locker was the long ball, but we didn’t play that. We got the ball down and played some lovely football in the second half.

“Even at 3-1 we still had a go at them, it was all Buxton, two clear penalties and we hit the post. We camped in their half and unfortunately sometimes you think it’s not going to be your day, and as it turns out it’s a defeat which is bad for us. Performance-wise, it was superb. Result-wise, it’s awful.”

The manager added: “How we lost the game, God only knows. Well, we do know, some very, very poor officials cost us dearly. And unfortunately, in the last minute, Stevens has said something to the linesman, ‘you won’t be able to sleep tonight’, and he’s got him sent off, which just about completes the bad day for us.”
