Hot-shot Morris sinks bottom club

Cheshire League Division One: Whaley Bridge 6, Grappenhall Sports 1

WHALEY Bridge brushed aside bottom club Grappenhall to move into second place in Division One.

Playing with three at the back, Whaley were rewarded after 15 minutes when the Grappenhall keeper fumbled a Rob Newton shot and Lee Morris tucked in the rebound. Six minutes later, Whaley made it 2-0 when Morris drilled a right-foot shot home from ten yards.

Despite their dominance, it wasn’t until the 40th minute that Whaley scored their third. Neat passing between Jack Gregory and Mick Ryan set up Bill Sutton who fired home.

Man of the match Morris completed a first-half hat-trick after Ryan’s back-heel beat Grappenhall’s offside trap and he rounded the keeper before sliding the ball home.

Five minutes into the second half, a quick throw-in found Ryan on the right and his fierce shot flew in off a Grappenhall defender.

The impressive Matt Brown hit the bar with a thundering drive on 55 minutes, but Grappenhall grabbed a goal back on the counter-attack.

With five minutes to go, Newton made it 6-1 after the keeper saved well from Damien Morrison.

James Tattersall turned in a solid performance in goal for Whaley, who travel to Rylands on Saturday.
