Hillmen banish hoodoo with win at Squires Gate

North West Counties League Premier Division: Squires Gate 0, Glossop North End 1

GLOSSOP got their season back on track by defeating Squires Gate 1-0 at School Road on Saturday.

The Hillmen, who lost their last two games, took all three points courtesy of a second-half Alex Elliot goal at a ground where North End have failed to win in over eight years.

The game was a scrappy affair with both sides struggling to keep the ball on an uneven pitch.

Glossop enjoyed the majority of possession in the opening exchanges and an early chance fell to Dean McGregor in the box but the striker saw his effort rise just over the bar.

The best chance of the first half fell to Sam Hind as the interval approached. Adam Oakes clipped a ball to the back post and an unmarked Hind controlled the ball but could only fire wide of Neil Beesley’s goal.

After the break, the away side dominated possession but failed to create any notable opportunities. North End were nearly made to pay when both Scott Harris and Nigel Taylor went close for Squires Gate.

Glossop then scored the only goal of the game with 15 minutes remaining. Substitute Elliot skipped past two of the Gate defenders before putting his laces through the ball on the edge of the box. Beesley, in the Squires Gate goal, was only able to watch Elliot’s effort fly past him into the back of the net. The Hillmen and Ben Proctor then managed to withstand a late fight-back .

* An 89th-minute penalty saw North End slip to a 2-1 defeat away at Bootle on Tuesday evening.

Daniel O’Connor cancelled out Steve Heaton’s 14th-minute opener on the stroke of half-time, before Kevin Black scored the winner from the spot.
