Hope Valley League Premier Division: Buxton Town 1, Tintwistle Villa 0
A SOLITARY Mark Harris strike midway through the first half secured Town a scrappy victory in a wind-affected game at Tintwistle.
Town should have taken an early lead from a Josh Greaves corner but Joe Burgess guided the free header the wrong side of the post.
Burgess and Wilding were a handful for the Tintwistle back four and it was James Wilding who was denied a debut goal when he met a Harris corner but Gary Newton headed off the line. Burgess then did all the hard work down the left but his finishing let him down.
The only goal of the game arrived in the 25th minute. Richard Mirams played in Greaves down the right, he found Jack Grindey on the edge of the box and Grindey played an inch perfect pass into the path of Harris who calmly found the corner of Steve Exley’s net.
Exley saved a venomous Greaves shot from six yards, while at the other end the impressive Chris Gartside saved Ronnie Dixon’s point-blank header.
After the break, Wilding and Burgess both saw Exley save shots while James Mallaband and Danny Ball were forced into making good tackles to deny Dixon.
Gartside made another good save as James Poole’s shot took a deflection, while Andy Jackson saw his powerful shot blocked by a defender.
Tintwistle, who were reduced to ten men when Ashley Roberts was sent off, almost made Town pay for their missed chances in the final minute but Mallaband blocked a Newton effort.
Buxton: Gartside, Mirams, Ball, Mallaband, Harris (Owen), Greaves, G.Burgess, Grindey, Broome, J.Burgess (Jackson), Wilding. Man of the Match: James Mallaband.
