Evo-Stik Premier Division: Marine 2, Buxton FC 0
FOR much of Tuesday’s match at Crosby Buxton looked the superior side but two very late goals by the high-flying Mariners sent the visitors home without reward.
The goalscorer, in the 85th and 94th minutes, was loan striker Marcus Carver, who had been Buxton’s nemesis in their earlier encounter.
His first goal resulted from the game’s most incisive move as Carver and Fowler exchanged passes on Buxton’s right for the striker to be able to advance and place a deft shot inside the far upright.
His second came from a break-away as Buxton threw everyone forward during a corner but the ball was cleared up-field to devastating effect.
The dramatic conclusion was rough justice after Buxton had more than matched the Mariners. Jordan Thewlis worked tirelessly as the lone striker, while in the first half, Steve Istead and Kyle Nix established a firm control of midfield to enable the visitors to build a series of passing moves.
The muscular Marine rearguard proved hard to penetrate, though Thewlis and David Haggerty were close to scoring.
Nix set up Thewlis but his flicked effort was cleared close to the line and then Haggerty’s free, far-post header from a Sandwith corner cleared the angle of post and bar.
At the other end Haggerty was again in inspired form, dominating Carver in the air and Marine’s first scoring opportunity took 36 minutes to arrive, ending with Collis making a low save to deny a 15-yard shot.
Marine came out determined for the second half and enjoyed a better 20-minute spell with Collis again having to make a sprawling, low save and Goulding shooting over the bar from 25 yards.
Twice in quick succession, Thewlis tricked his way past defenders on the right by-line but still a goal would not come.
Then Marine produced a credible threat. One effort hit the crossbar and Grant Black cleared a follow-up immediately before Carver’s goal-scoring prowess earned full points for the Mariners.
