Evo-Stik First Division South: New Mills 1, Belper Town 4
THREE second-half goals were sufficient for Belper to triumph over New Mills last Monday.
Ashley Longstaff missed a very presentable opportunity early in the game for Belper but soon made amends when he opened the scoring in the 13th minute. He rose unchallenged to head home Chris Adam’s corner with no defender in his immediate vicinity.
The home side were back on level terms four minutes later. Luke Horrocks set up Michael Bowler who was playing in a more advanced position than normal and whilst his resulting effort from the edge of the penalty area wasn’t the cleanest of strikes, it was accurate enough to find the bottom corner.
The game was evenly balanced at half-time but Belper grabbed it by the scruff of the neck five minutes into the second half when again Longstaff was afforded far too much space in the penalty area and the unmarked striker was on hand to divert Chris Adam’s cross past James Coates.
The Millers then saw why Jon Froggatt is the NPL Division One South’s current leading scorer.
With around 20 minutes remaining, Belper were awarded a free-kick around 20 yards from goal and Froggatt proceeded to curl the ball through the virtually non-existent defensive wall.
Then Dave Chadwick was harshly penalised by the referee for what looked a fair, ball-winning tackle and Froggatt again was clinical with a set-piece as he coolly dispatched the subsequent penalty kick.
New Mills: Coates, Bowler, Moss, Swirad, Chadwick, Barras, Meakin, Field, Deegan, Grandison, Horrocks. Subs: Pickering, Needham, Lonsdale, Benson, Edridge.
