WHALEY consolidated their place at the top of the Hope Valley Premier Division with a superb team effort against Dove Holes.

It took Whaley 25 minutes to take the lead when Mick Ryan lashed the ball across the goalmouth into the far corner.

After sustained pressure, Rob Newton made it 2-0 as he controlled the ball at the penalty spot and calmly side-stepped the Dove defence and keeper before sliding the ball home.

Only a string of superb saves by Dove’s keeper Stewart Lindsey stopped Whaley running riot, but he was powerless to stop Dan Whelan’s free header from a Bill Sutton corner.

Dove’s attacking options were limited as Scott Dignan and Paul Kelsall controlled the midfield for Whaley.

After the break, Whaley went 4-0 ahead after Newton beat Lindsey, at his near post, with a powerful shot.

Ryan made it 5-0 with a carbon copy of his first half goal.

Once again, Whaley’s defenders were magnificent but, for his two goals and non-stop running, Whaley’s man of the match was Rob Newton.
