Draw sets up ‘Super Sunday’ title clash

East Midlands Veterans League

Tideswell United 1

Empire Vets 1

MISSING several key players, Tideswell dropped crucial points in the title race.

United had few openings in the first period. Paul Boulton fired over from a Peter Johnson corner, Pat Jones forced a smart save by the keeper from distance and Dave Bradbury saw a half chance fly over the crossbar.

Adi Daniels in the Tideswell goal recovered well after Ian Mycock beat his own keeper with a back header.

United posed more of a threat after half time, with Pat Jones pushed further forward.

Within ten minutes the hosts took a deserved lead. Julian Wildgoose fizzed a ball down the left channel for Mark Barton, and his deep cross was smashed into the roof of the net by Boulton.

The visitors rallied and drew level as United failed to clear their lines, after which Barton smashed a shot wide of the target as Tideswell searched in vain for a winner. Tideswell now host nearest rivals Wollerton Wanderers on Sunday in a winner-takes-all match.
