Debut memorial match sees big attendance turn out and donate

The inaugural Alastair Smith Memorial Shield was staged at the Silverlands last weekend.

Over 250 people were in attendance on a sun-drenched afternoon that saw Federal Mogul overcome a Fairfield Select XI, 6-2.

Federal Mogul were 3-0 up at the interval after goals from Howard Lindley, Steve Hamilton and Brian Ashton (penalty).

After some changes at the break, Fairfield put up more of a fight but it didn’t stop them going 5-0 down.

A further effort from Lindley and an unfortunate own goal from Dan Gould increased the lead.

Paul Mantle then reduced the arrears for Fairfield but another spot-kick from Ashton made it 6-1 to Federal Mogul.

Adam Smith then netted a consolation deep into injury time as the game finished up 6-2.

On the financial side, the day was declared a roaring success by organisers, with £1,480 raised towards the British Heart Foundation.

Organisers thanked sponsors, spectators and players for helping towards the day.
