Coates heroics help Millers on their travels

Evo-Stik First Division South: Newcastle Town 1, New Mills AFC 1

A QUICK-FIRE equaliser by Leon Grandinson was enough to ensure New Mills took a point home from Newcastle Town.

The Millers were indebted to keeper James Coates, who pulled off a string of outstanding saves throughout Tuesday night’s clash.

Dave Whittaker almost opened the scoring for Newcastle on 18 minutes, but his rasping long-range effort was turned aside by James Coates.

The home side took the lead nine minutes after the break, as Kyle Diskin teed up Andy Nicholls, who found the bottom corner via the inside of the post.

New Mills struck back within five minutes, as James Moss’ cross from the left was stabbed home from close range by Grandinson.

A fine reaction save from Coates denied Newcastle a second on 78 minutes, as he diverted Harry Clayton’s flicked effort wide.

The Millers could have won it in the closing stages through Grandinson, but Town keeper Dave Parton saved well with his legs.
