Evo-Stik Division One South: New Mills AFC 4, Coalville Town 2

A THOROUGHLY entertaining game saw New Mills continue to pressurise the Evo-Stik Division One South playoff zone following a 4-2 victory against Coalville Town at Church Lane on Saturday afternoon.

The visitors, who like New Mills are in their debut season in The NPL, should have taken the lead in the sixth minute when Anthony Carney benefited from a quick crossfield free-kick, but from ten yards his effort hit the outside of the upright.

That miss proved significant five minutes later when The Millers opened the scoring. James Moss’ deep cross was nodded down by Ben Deegan into the path of centre-half Dave Chadwick who side-footed a shot past the onrushing Sean Bowles from eight yards.

Not for the first time this season, a quick set-piece proved the home team’s undoing just after the midpoint of the half. Following a short corner routine, Ryan Robbins dispossessed Max Lonsdale around the edge of his penalty area and then proceeded to run three quarters of the pitch before splendidly beating James Coates with a very precise finish into the bottom corner.

The scores were level for only three minutes though as a close-range effort from Jordan Edridge saw The Millers regain the lead. After Bowles could only half stop an effort from Luke Horrocks, defender Cameron Powell valiantly prevented the ball from crossing the line but young Edridge quickly pounced on the rebound to register his first goal for the club. In a crazy seven-minute spell, Coalville equalised for a second time when 17-year-old Powell marked his senior debut with a towering header at the back post.

There was still time in a pulsating opening 45 minutes for New Mills to strike again just prior to the interval. The goal owed its origins from a huge clearance by Coates which was flicked on by Deegan and Leon Grandison superbly lifted the ball over the stranded Bowles.

Deegan ensured the three points for the Millers in the 54th minute. Whilst the striker’s effort was undoubtedly hit with venom, it was straight at Sean Bowles but the keeper inexplicably let the ball straight through his legs.

Max Lonsdale very nearly scored a fifth goal but his shot, which took a deflection off Cameron Powell, rebounded to safety off the post.

It was Coalville, who didn’t pose such an attacking threat after the break, who had the final two scoring opportunities of the afternoon. Coates made an excellent low save down at the base of his post to deny substitute David Blenkinsop and then the keeper was beaten by Carney’s effort but on this occasion was rescued by his post.

New Mills: Coates, Bowler, Moss (Benson), Swirad, Chadwick, Lonsdale, Meakin, Edridge (Newman), Deegan, Grandison, Horrocks. Unused sub: Tony Barras.
