Closing in on leaders

Premier Division

Whaley Bridge 5

Brampton 1

Whaley Bridge moved to within one point of the Hope Valley Premier League leaders with a win over bottom club Brampton.

For 40 minutes, Brampton belied their lowly league position and made life difficult for Whaley.

However, as the first half drew to a close, Brampton were swamped by three goals in five minutes as substitute Dan Christie grabbed two and Ray Dwolitka scored one.

At the start of the second half, Whaley again found Brampton’s spirited defence hard to overcome and were given cause for concern when Brampton pulled a goal back from a corner.

Whaley and Brampton both squandered good chances until Paul Kelsall restored Whaley’s three-goal lead with a terrific shot from 30 yards, and he was on hand again to make it 5-1 to Whaley.

Man of the match was Kelsall for his outstanding effort in midfield and two goals.
