BUXTON Christians were far from their best, losing by the odd goal in seven to Whaley Bridge Reserves.

Playing into a ferocious wind in the first half, the Christians were out-battled and out-thought by a sharp, young Whaley team which led 3-0 at half time thanks to some clinical finishing.

Christians stormed back in the second half, this time with the wind in their favour.

Heathcote turned in a Roberts cross to make it 3-1, and then Richardson added a second direct from a corner.

Mellor scored from close range to level the scores at 3-3.

At this stage, Christians looked odds on to go on and win the game, but a rash challenge gave Whaley a penalty and they converted it to run out 4-3 winners.

Having been convincingly beaten in the cup at the same venue earlier in the season, this was a great win for Whaley who showed skill and character.

For Christians, however, this defeat was a major disappointment.
