Buxton under-21’s have reached the HKL North Midlands League Cup Final after beating Mickleover Sports 5-3.
Both teams started the game brightly with neither side creating many opportunities to open the scoring.
As the game settled, the young Bucks found themselves 2-0 down after failing to clear from two Mickleover set-pieces.
Buxton rallied together and managed to pull a goal back through Alex Airey, his fiercely struck left footed drive finding the bottom right corner of the goal.
Airey then nearly levelled the scoring, a superb turn and volley was matched by a fine save from the Mickleover ‘keeper.
Buxton came out fighting after the restart and it quickly paid off with Airey racing onto a clipped ball from James Gemmell to round the keeper before slotting home from the tight angle.
With Mickleover struggling to contain Buxton they soon had the lead as James Handley latched onto a through ball to calmly lift over the stranded goalkeeper.
With Buxton now firmly in control they soon had a fourth, this time John Ollerenshaw reacting quickest in the box to turn the ball into the back of the net.
With time against them and nothing to lose Mickleover pulled a goal back, a well worked corner routine turned in at the near post to bring them back into the game.
With only 10 minutes left, Buxton continued to defend tirelessly as the midfield duo of Matt Wilkinson and Charlie Johnson thwarted the Mickleover attacks and soon had their rewards.
Dan Hopkins pounced on a moment of hesitation in the Mickleover defence to free Airey who made no mistake, curling a stunning 40-yard strike beyond the onrushing keeper to complete a brilliant hat-trick and give the young Bucks a well deserved victory,
Buxton will now take on Staveley Miners Welfare in the final on Thursday May 7 (Venue TBC).
