Buxton’s season ends with derby defeat to Matlock

Evo-Stik Premier Division

Buxton FC 1, Matlock Town 3

BUXTON FC failed to secure a place in the end-of-season Evo-Stik playoffs, as Ross Hannah struck a hat-trick for Matlock Town during their 3-1 win in the Easter Monday derby.

Following Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Nantwich Town, the Bucks needed a win against Matlock and fifth-placed North Ferriby United to slip-up at relegation-threatened Frickley Athletic.

In front of a crowd of nearly 600 at the Silverlands, Matlock took a 20th minute lead through their leading scorer Hannah with his 50th goal of the season.

The Bucks hit back immediately through Josh Wilde to make it 1-1 at half time, and despite the Gladiators’ Kris Bowler being shown a red card midway through the half, Buxton couldn’t make the extra man count as Hannah struck twice late on to secure the win.

The result didn’t matter to Buxton’s slim playoff hopes, though, as North Ferriby’s 1-0 win at Frickley meant they secured the final spot as the Bucks finish the season just behind them in sixth place.
