Buxton and Darlington 1883 played out an evenly-fought contest in the first round of qualifying for this year’s FA Trophy.
A thrilling tie at Silverlands climaxed in added time when a penalty kick looked likely to prevent the replay.
However, Andy Warrington made a superb save to deny Steve Thompson from the spot and force a replay this Wednesday evening at Bishop Auckland.
The first half was a goalless affair but Darlington had much the better of the exchanges, with Warrington and some sound defending standing in the way.
Right on half-time, Buxton were denied a goal when visiting ‘keeper Mark Bell saved superbly from a Lee Morris header.
The second half was more even, but in the 60th minute Darlington went ahead when Thompson netted with a fierce and accurate shot from the edge of the penalty area.
Buxton then enjoyed their best spell with Matt Thornhill’s close-range effort squeezed out for a corner, but the midfielder scored the equaliser in the 78th minute with a flying header from Grant Black’s driven short cross.
Darlington attacked strongly in the closing minutes and close to the goal-line Jamie Green had to hack away Thompson’s driven low cross before the added time drama arrived.
Thompson was fouled by Green, but Warrington made a fine low save from the midfielder’s penalty kick and then got his body in the way of David Dowson’s follow-up shot.
Buxton manager Martin McIntosh, who signed a new two-and-a-half year contract prior to the match, will now look for his side to make the quick turnaround on Wednesday, with the winning side drawn away to Sheffield FC in the second round.
Buxton: Warrington; Black, Palmer, Ryan, Green; Stevens (Lugsden 56), Istead, Thornhill; Osborne (Broadhead 90), Morris, King.
