Evo-Stik Premier Division: Buxton FC 1, Chester 1

HIGH-FLYING Chester were grounded by a strong team performance from Buxton when they visited the Silverlands last Wednesday.

The incident-packed match included a goal-line clearance, a hotly disputed penalty and then a penalty miss. It had looked as if Steve Ridley’s penalty miss was going to be punished dearly when Michael Powell put the visitors in front.

They had been incensed at the penalty award but Ridley managed to put his effort wide of the post. That spurred Chester on with Wesley Baynes setting up Powell to take the lead on 42 minutes.

Things appeared to go from bad to worse when right on the stroke of half-time the visitors again had the ball in the back of the net but this time the effort was ruled out for offside.

In the second half Buxton’s Josh Wilde levelled on 55 minutes with a sweetly struck effort from about 18 yards out. It was the first goal conceded by the Chester team in over 750 minutes of football. Both teams were fully committed to getting a winner but had to settle for a share of the spoils.

Buxton: Hartley, Black, Wilde, Williams, Horne, Maxfield, Stevens, Towey, Reed, Lugsden, Ridley (Pembleton, 80). Subs not used: Taylor, Liversidge, Ovington, Hopkins. Att: 602.
