Derbyshire to embark on pre-season Barbados tour

DERBYSHIRE County Cricket Club is to embark on its fourth successive tour of Barbados.

Karl Krikken’s men will follow the same pre-season formula that worked so effectively ahead of the recent title-winning campaign.

The squad will make for the Caribbean on Monday March 11, 2013, returning 12 days later after an intense period of warm weather preparation for the new season.

A combination of English and local opposition are set to take part in the schedule which will see Derbyshire contest a brace of two-day fixtures, a 40-over match and the showpiece Twenty20 tournament.

Head Coach Krikken said: “Barbados is a tried and tested pre-season venue for several counties and it provides ideal preparation ahead of a challenging domestic campaign.

“To be guaranteed good weather and consequently time on the field is extremely important for our players at this critical time of year.

“We’ve certainly felt the benefit from previous visits and it’s telling that the 2012 trophy winners – Hampshire, Warwickshire and Derbyshire – all toured Barbados during pre-season, as did Yorkshire who won promotion from the Second Division and reached the Friends Life t20 Finals Day.

“It’s an intense itinerary and one that gives us the best possible chance of hitting the ground running for First Division cricket, as well as giving our supporters some meaningful cricket to follow as the season approaches.”
