TWO High Peak sporting stars have collected medals at this year’s Derbyshire Sports Awards.
Great Britain wheelchair basketball player Maddie Thompson, from Hope, and Ellie Bamber, of High Peak Sharks Swimming Club, were among the winners at this year’s awards, sponsored by the University of Derby.
Trophies were awarded in 12 categories, as the county’s best and brightest sporting stars, coaches and volunteers gathered at The Roundhouse in Derby with other invited guests.
Cllr Carol Hart, chair of organisers Derbyshire Sport, said: “There is some tremendous sporting talent in Derbyshire as well as a wealth of dedicated coaches and volunteers and some fantastic clubs in the county, and it is great to be able to recognise the dedication these people show and the contribution that they make.”
Maddie, 16, who was part of the Great Britain Women’s team which won gold at the Paralympic World Cup in May, was named the University of Derby Disabled Sportsperson of the Year. She was also part of the team which won a bronze at the U25 Women’s World Championships, and was selected to compete for GB at the European Championships in Israel where the team won bronze.
Maddie is also nominated in the Junior Disabled Sportsperson of the Year category of the BBC East Midlands Sports Awards. The winners are announced today (Thursday).
Meanwhile Ellie, 15, from New Mills, was named the Origination Junior Disabled Sportsperson of the Year. Earlier this year Ellie won gold in the British Long Distance Postal Swim, and she also won two gold medals and two silver at the DSE Open Nationals.
