Severe wintry weather has forced the postponement of a popular Peak District cycling event.

The Buxton Mountain Time Trial was due to take place tomorrow (Good Friday), but with snow and ice lying on the course organisers have opted to postpone the event until Bank Holiday Monday May 6.

A statement on the website www.buxtonmtt.co.uk reads: “With no signs of the weather improving significantly we have taken the decision to postpone the Mountain Time Trial.

“This decision has not been taken lightly, but has been taken with rider safety paramount in our minds.”

Organised by Buxton Cycling Club, the annual Buxton Mountain Time Trial is run along roads in and around Longnor. The course is recognised as one of the toughest in the country.

The Mountain TT is the second major local sporting event to fall victim of the ongoing cold snap. On Friday, organisers of Flagg Races pulled the plug on this year’s Easter Tuesday race meeting after days of heavy snowfall blanketed the course at Flagg Moor.
