Aussies to field world-class pedigree against Derbyshire

AS MANY as nine full internationals could feature for Australia A when they play Derbyshire this week in a three-day fixture at the County Ground.

The touring Australians boast six players with Test experience in captain Ed Cowan, off-spinner Nathan Lyon, wicketkeeper Tim Paine, all-rounder Stephen Smith and the fast bowling duo of Mitchell Johnson and Mitchell Starc.

Peter Forrest, George Bailey and Tom Cooper all have full international experience in the limited-overs arenas.

Derbyshire Head Coach Karl Krikken said the hosts will meet their international opponents with a near full strength side, and believes the match can provide valuable preparation for the LV= County Championship run-in.

“We’ve played only one day of red ball cricket since the Friends Life t20 break so, with important matches to come, the game versus Australia A comes at a very good time,” he explained.

“It’s always a privilege for county cricketers to play against touring sides and we’re looking forward to three days of tough cricket versus a young and very talented team.

“As well as helping us prepare for the important forthcoming match versus Kent, it’s a great challenge for our lads to face some of the brightest young cricketers from Down Under, many of whom no doubt have a future in the international game.”

Play at the County Ground, Derby, is scheduled to start at 11am on Friday.
