A ticket to ride for Jessica and Lorna
TWO HIGH Peak horse riders have each earned tickets to the coveted Horse of the Year Show after reaching the finals of a national championship.
At Osbaldeston Equestrian Centre in Lancashire, Jessica Smith and Lorna Pearson qualified for the finals of the 2009 South Essex Insurance Brokers Search for a Star Championships, which will be held at the Horse of the Year Show at the NEC, Birmingham, in October.
Jessica Smith, 18, from Furness Vale, rode Suzanne Hudson's eight-year-old grey gelding Glenavy and took first place in the Riding Club Show Horse class.
Suzanne bought Glenavy three years ago, unseen over the internet from Ireland. He has been brought on by Jessica doing dressage, one day events and lots of riding club activities at Chapel-en-le-Frith Riding Club.
"I bought him for Jess to ride, and she has done all the work producing him," said a delighted Suzanne.
Lorna, from Chapel-en-le-Frith, rode her mother's Sue Simons' ten-year-old mare, Fynetime, in the Riding Horse/Hack Class.
Fynetime, known as "Kiera" at home, was bred to be a riding horse for Sue.
"The dam was a small hunter and won at county level," explained Sue.
"As a youngster, Kiera was unbeaten as a hunter in-hand, but ended up going eventing."
Last summer they showed her in amature and home produced classes, and hunted all winter with the High Peak and the Four Shires. This is her first show this year.
"It has been a lifelong ambition to qualify for the Horse of the Year Show, and I can't believe it," added Sue.
"It was a last minute decision to come here."
Sue also has a show hunter and hopes to try a Search for a Star qualifier later in the year.
"She is a princess, very spoilt but she is the easiest to do, sweet and kind and loves going to parties, so she will love Horse of the Year," she added.
