LETTER: Lions bonfire event was a roaring success

Buxton & District LIONS would like to thank all those people who attended and supported the 50th annual Buxton bonfire and fireworks event held on Saturday, November 5.

A record number of people attended the event and we hope that everyone had a most enjoyable evening. It must now rank again as one of the best community events held in the area (particularly as so many such events in the country are cancelled due to lack of volunteers and/or funding).

Such was the attendance, that the gate was opened early so as to let the people enter and start enjoying themselves in the atmosphere of the evening ahead.

Hats, scarves, thick coats and wellies were the order on this very chilly evening, with everyone heading for mulled wine, hot chocolate, hog roast and burgers. The food tent was busy as soon as we opened, with the supplies of food and drink finishing just before the close of the event… even with some coming back for seconds.

The atmosphere was further enhanced by suitable music being played during the whole evening as well as the “Guy” being paraded and ceremonially placed on the bonfire.

The Buxton community spirit was certainly alive on the night with only friendship and happiness being in plenty.

The professional provider of the firework display considered safety the priority over timing…..thereafter the 20 minute show of fireworks was certainly worth waiting for.

We have had many positive comments of how enjoyable the event was and we hope that you come back and support this long standing community event in 2017.
