The overwhelming majority of members of cabinet of the party of Government asked the British people to back their view that Britain should remain in the EU.

So now the Government’s stance has been defeated at the ballot box, no other democratic option is available other than that of calling a general election.

A new government needs a mandate from the electorate to send representatives to Brussels with a plan for what the future of Britain outside the EU looks like.

How else can negotiations with the EU even begin?
