INITIAL work to demolish the former High Peak College site in Harpur Hill is to get underway next week.
The Advertiser understands work to identify and remove asbestos from the site, which has been empty since the University of Derby relocated their Buxton campus to the Devonshire Dome, will start on Monday.
High Peak borough councillor Lynn Stone, representing the Cote Heath ward, said the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) had been in touch with the University of Derby, and that a contract regarding the survey and removal of the asbestos had now been agreed.
“The initial survey will start on Monday,” Cllr Stone said. “They will first identify and then remove the asbestos before the site is demolished.
“I think this is excellent news for the residents of the area, that things are moving forward and we have a start date.”
The area’s county councillor, Pam Reddy, added: “It is excellent news that the survey is to take place.
“It shows that Derby University is listening to the community, and this initial work will be very much welcomed by local residents.”
