Safety work is to be carried out on 26 memorials and headstones in St Peter’s (C of E) churchyard in Hope.
High Peak Borough Council is responsible for the maintenance of closed churchyards and officers carry out regular checks to ensure they remain safe places for people to visit.
The work includes checking each headstone and is carried out carefully and respectfully by trained officers. Notices advising grave owners what to do next are placed on memorials found to be unsafe and, where possible, letters are also sent to owners. Work may also be undertaken to support headstones in immediate danger of falling.
Grave owners, or their next of kin, are responsible for memorials and have a duty to keep them repaired and in a safe condition.
