FORMER United Nations commander in Bosnia, Colonel Bob Stewart DSO, is to be the guest speaker at a Christmas lunch in Hayfield.

Col Stewart was commissioned in to the Cheshire Regiment as a Second Lieutenant in 1969, promoted to Lieutenant in 1971 and to Captain in 1975. For a time, he guarded Rudolf Hess in Spandau Prison, Berlin.

After serving in Northern Ireland, he assumed command of 1st Battalion, Cheshire Regiment, before becoming the first British Commander of United Nations forces in Bosnia from September 1992 to May 1993. In 1993, he took up the appointment of Chief of Policy at Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe, retiring in 1996.

He will speak at the Royal Hotel in Hayfield at noon on November 27, at a lunch organised by High Peak Conservatives. The event is open to all, and costs £25 per person.
