Warning to High Peak residents over phone scam

Police are warning High Peak residents to be on their guard after a Bamford resident received a suspicious phone call.

The female caller rang from a withheld number and asked for the resident by name.

She said she represented a legitimate organisation and that a lump sum was reserved for the resident as payment for a car accident but when the resident said they hadn’t been involved in an accident, the caller hung up.

Police say this kind of call could be an advanced fee fraud attempt where victims are told to make advance or upfront payments for goods, services or to claim money they have won or inherited. The goods or money promised to the victim don’t really exist and never materialise after payment has been made.

Residents are being urged to be mindful when dealing with unknown people who call and ask for either personal details or bank details.
