A VOLUNTEER day at Christ Church Burbage is currently being planned for when the weather improves.

The fruit trees that were planted last year need to be pruned and weeded. Anyone who would like to purchase a fruit tree, priced at £20, for the community orchard should contact Peter Allen-Burgess on 01298 71061, 07876 150207 or email p.burgess-allen@virgin.net.

Christ Church Burbage is currently running an urgent fundraising appeal after dry rot problems were discovered at the 150-year-old church.

Around £100,000 is needed to help repair the problem and secure the future of the church. And the dry rot problem is in addition to ongoing problems with the church roof, which needs replacing, so any repairs need to be carried out at the same time.

The total amount needed is around £200,000 though half of that is already in place.

English Heritage, who last year placed the church on their Heritage at Risk Register for the first time, have offered a grant of £40,000 towards the cost of the work, but with the condition that repairs must start by March so the remainder of the money needs to be found as quickly as possible.

To donate to the appeal collect an envelope from the church or contact church warden Joyce Allwright on 01298 78483. Alternatively donations can be posted through Joyce’s door at 2 Arbor Grove, Buxton.
