Village’s tribute to team heroes

A VILLAGE football team is hoping to score a big success by raising money for Cancer Research in memory of two of its best supporters.

Buxworth Football Club is holding a memorial match for Billy Tonge and Bev Brocklehurst.

Billy was manager at Buxworth Football Club for 22 years, a period which saw them do the double twice.

“He loved every minute of it and made lots of friends along the way,” said Sueanne Broadbent, who is organsing the event along with Stephen Broadbent and Bev’s daughter Kate.

“Bev was a much-loved member of the community,” said Sueanne.

“She was secretary and treasurer of the club for many years and played a big role in organising charity events to raise funds for the club and also got to watch them win the double twice over, so it only seems fitting to be holding a football match in their memory.”

The match will take place on Monday, August 27, at Buxworth Football pitch, kick-off at 1pm.

There will be refreshments available and everyone is welcome afterwards at Buxworth War Memorial Club.

“We are also looking for people to play,” said Sueanne. “Anyone who has played for Buxworth or knew Billy or Bev and would like a few minutes on Buxworth’s wonderful pitch please contact Stephen Broadbent on 01663 741 874 or 07717 844 992.”
