A PEAK District organist is officially standing down after more than half a century of performing at places of worship across the area.
Jessica Smith is known locally as the ‘mobile organist’ on account of her 56 years of playing at local churches and chapels.
The 66-year-old, from Taddington, began performing at the age of ten at Flash Methodist Chapel.
“I was taught on the piano and only had one lesson on the organ - but I instantly fell in love with it,” explained Jessica.
Her final performance was at Monyash Chapel on Sunday during a special anniversary service – but she will remain ‘on standby’ to offer assistance when required.
“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time playing the organ and have met some wonderful people,” added Jessica, who continues to play the tenor horn with Hollinsclough Brass Band.
