AN ancient custom dating back to Anglo Saxon times will be carried out at a Buxton church next weekend.
The ceremony of clypping the church will be held before a communion service at Christ Church, Burbage on Sunday, August 5 at 10.30am.
The Anglo Saxon word clypan means to embrace so the congregation will go outside and, holding hands, will embrace the church.
The first hymn will be sung to the accompaniment of Burbage Band and the church and village will be blessed by the Reverend John Hudghton.
After the service, coffee and tea will be served followed by lunch in the Institute.
Tickets, costing £7, are available from Margaret Barnes on 01298 23270, Josy Fry on 01298 938246 and Margaret Foster on 01298 78658.
