Parents encouraged to make road safety a priority

A ROAD Safety group is encouraging parent to make road safety a priority during Child Safety Week (June 20 – 26).

Derby and Derbyshire Road Safety Partnership chairman Mike Ashworth said: “Parents have an important role to play in ensuring that their children become safe road users.

“Children copy what their parents do so it’s vital to set a good example. Always follow the green cross code and talk to your child about the importance of staying safe when using the road.”

Mike added: “The government has a wealth of online resources for parents who want to their teach children about road safety. Log on to find short films, games and worksheets designed to complement the road safety lessons your child receives at school.”

The government’s road safety education web pages can be found at: http://think.direct.gov.uk/

The web pages include advice for parents of primary and secondary school children. There are separate sections giving advice about teaching road safety to: under fives; five to seven year olds; 7-11 year olds; and 11-16 year olds.
