Ambitious plans to transform Glossop Library and Glossop Adult Education Centre into a multi-use community venue came under the spotlight this week.

Council leaders met to discuss the plans, and are hoping to secure a Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) grant to develop both buildings into a ‘one-stop learning hub’ to support residents in the Glossopdale area.

Derbyshire County Council is also working closely with High Peak Borough Council, which owns the Grade II listed Victoria Hall building on Talbot Road, on a joint funding bid for the project.

Plans are still at draft stage but include proposals to share a range of services to create a ‘Glossopdale Campus’.

The county council’s Deputy Cabinet Member for Health and Communities, Councillor Ellie Wilcox, said: “We have these two fabulous community buildings in Glossop both offering services which support residents such as helping them with job applications, providing debt advice and getting online.

“There is also much more with something for everyone including books, CDs and DVDs, local studies and family history information, free internet access and opportunities for learning so we believe it makes sense to bring these buildings together.

“The library will remain within Victoria Hall but we want to develop it into offering much more than the traditional library services people may expect.

“Joining forces with the borough council creates a fantastic opportunity for Glossopdale and we’re looking forward to talking to local people about our ideas and securing the funds we need to achieve our vision.

“We already have some funding to contribute but are keen to make the most of grants from other sources such as the Heritage Lottery Fund so we don’t have to limit the ambitious scope of our plans.”

The county council have approximately £2 million earmarked to revamp Glossop Library.

Local residents, library users, Glossopdale Trust and the campaign group Save Our Unique Library (SOUL) − Glossop will be invited to consider the HLF bid before it is submitted and will be consulted on all the proposals.
