LOCAL RESIDENTS are being asked to help look after a Buxton churchyard.
St John’s Church has recently been awarded a grant of £44,700 from Community Spaces Groundwork UK, an organisation responsible for dispersing money from the Big Lottery Fund, to help towards the cost of establishing a garden of remembrance with seating and a fountain in the churchyard.
Work has already began on the project to clear undergrowth and prepare the site ,but the conditions of the grant exclude any work being done on the graves themselves – so local people are being asked to help spruce up the graveyard. People are being encouraged to adopt a six foot by two foot plot and take responsibility for planting it and looking after it. It is hoped that money can be raised specifically for renovating the graves and restoring the headstones.
Anyone interested in getting involved should contact church warden Jean Luton on 01298 24352.
