AROUND 20 young drivers from the Buxton area took part in a safety course delivered by the Derby and Derbyshire Road Safety Partnership.

It involved a mock crash between a Ford Fiesta and a Volkswagen Golf which was staged at Buxton Fire Station and set up by Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service.

The group watched what would happened in the aftermath of the serious collision, with volunteers playing the part of the casualties.

Firefighters cut the victims free from the vehicles and paramedics explained the type of injuries they might have suffered and simulated what they would do to treat the passengers.

Afterwards, the youngsters heard from specialist police officers on how to handle the roads – and the personal experience of a parent whose 16-year-old son died as a passenger in a serious collision on the A52.
