A FUNDRAISING appeal to restore a Buxton war memorial has been launched this week.

Rector of Buxton Rev John Hudghton and church warden Eric Thompson are appealing for donations towards the restoration of the memorial in the grounds of St Mary’s church on Dale Road.

The memorial, which was erected in the 1920s, is currently in a poor state and now requires a complete restoration, which would include taking down the memorial, rebuilding the base, putting in a new plinth and rebuilding the memorial cross.

The total cost of the restoration will be around £4,500 including church architect fees and it is hoped to get the project completed before the winter. A donation of £500 has already been made but it is hoped the rest of the money can be found through fundraising.

Rev Hudghton said: “There is going to be an inscription dedicated to people who have died in conflicts since the first World War, people like Scott Taylor (the Buxton marine who died in Afghanistan).

“We just hope people will continue to support the memory of all those who have died in wars serving their country and would be willing to donate to the restoration of a memorial in Buxton for that purpose.”
