NEW MILLS police are set to target retail related crime in the run-up to Christmas.

The New Mills and Hayfield Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team are launching Operation Christmas Cracker, to help prevent and reduce shoplifting in the town.

Patrols will be stepped up in and around the town and also at local rail and bus stations and officers will be visiting shops and businesses to offer crime prevention advice and encourage them to report any suspicious incidents.

Local residents can also pick up a free purse chain, which can help to prevent purses from being stolen.

PCSO Lee Baker said: “This operation is all about supporting our businesses and keeping the community safe at what can be a very busy time of year.

“We will be working alongside CCTV operators, store security staff to deter and detect retail related crime and also anti-social behaviour.”
