Buxton Well Dressing Festival officially gets underway today (Saturday), with the town’s three well dressings going on public display.

The completed boards are on show at St Ann’s Well in The Crescent, The Children’s Well in Spring Gardens and the Higher Buxton Well on the Market Place, where they will remain until the conclusion of the ten-day festival.

Dressing of all three wells began at St John’s Church on Wednesday by a team of volunteers, including pupils from Buxton Community School who have designed and decorated The Children’s Well.

The official Blessing of the Wells will take place on Sunday, starting with a short service at St. Anne’s Church at 1.45pm.

A procession will then march through the town, calling at each well in turn, with music provided by Fairfield Band.

It will be followed at 3pm by the crowning of the 2015 Buxton Well Dressing Queen Lilly-Anne Owen and Rosebud Bessie Morris at St John’s Church.

The crowning will be carried out by guest of honour Mary-Louise Johnston, the 1965 well dressing queen and grandmother of the queen-elect.

Chris Simpson will present a look back at old Buxton, including images of historic well dressings and carnivals, during a presentation at Burbage Institute on Monday at 7.30pm. Admission is £4 on the door.

The fair on the Market Place opens on Wednesday at 5pm.
